Appel was a Dutch avant-garde artist and cofounder of the group CoBrA. Encounter, painted in 1951, is emblematic of Appel's spontaneous style and interest in mythology and expressive experimentation.
What we love about it: Appel's expressive and childlike figuration. We are totally endeared to the bird at the top of the image as well as the way that the figures just barely fit within the limits of the compositional frame.
