Photograph, c. early-mid 20th century

$300.00

This photograph is one of the most exciting finds that we have come across. It comes from the estate of Canadian artist Johanna (Hanni) Rothschild, where it hung on the wall of her home. Though unsigned, was likely taken by one of her European avant-garde friends in the mid twentieth-century.

It reflects the fascination and inspiration that such artists found in material objects like masks and drums that entered European museums and collections from Africa, the Pacific coast, and other colonized regions at this time.

What we love about it: this photo is absolutely hanging on our wall until it sells! We can't take our eyes off of this enigmatic face. It reminds us of Man Ray and Picasso's captivation with masks. It's a gorgeous object, printed on high quality paper, with a rich monotonality and beautifully-captured details.

Dimensions: 39.5 x 49.5 cm unframed.

Very good condition. Note that detailed condition reports are available for all artworks upon request.
